Overview
MOONKEY is a Solana meme token based on the astronaut monkey character from Pump.fun's "total memetic domination" artwork. It reached an all-time high market capitalisation of approximately $2.18 million on 28 August 2026 before retracing to the low six figures within hours.
Origin
Commentators noted that the monkey astronaut was the only character in the widely circulated Pump.fun promotional image that had not yet been tokenised. That observation was the entire thesis behind the launch.
Why it ran
The token launched while APEFONE was running vertically. Attention and volume concentrated on Pump.fun primate imagery, and MOONKEY captured the overflow.
The run was accelerated by a fabricated claim that Alon, the Pump.fun co-founder, had bought the token. A screenshot of a wallet profile was circulated as evidence. Traders subsequently pointed out that the account was a spoof and that no such purchase had taken place.
The episode is best read as a coordinated attempt to redirect market share away from the leading runner by manufacturing an endorsement.
Lesson
When one token is running exceptionally hard, adjacent tokens can run purely on the volume and attention it generates, independent of their own merit. Second-order launches during a vertical move are not evidence of a new narrative.
Endorsement claims should be verified against the named party's own account before they are treated as fact. A wallet screenshot is not proof of identity, and spoofed profiles are a routine tool for manufacturing conviction at the top of a move.
