Overview
Clippy PFP Cult is a Solana token launched on Pump.fun during the viral "Clippy PFP" movement of August 2025. It is a community-held nostalgia and anti-corporate meme token built around Clippy, the animated paperclip assistant that shipped with Microsoft Office in the late 1990s and early 2000s.
The lore
In the movement's framing, Clippy represents an earlier era of software: a program that offered help without collecting personal data, tracking behaviour, training models on user information or altering its terms after purchase. That framing is set against contemporary technology practices, and the call to action is deliberately simple — change your profile picture to Clippy as a silent form of protest.
Community messaging repeats a small set of lines: "Change your pfp to Clippy and join the cult, reject corporations and bots and embrace tradition", "Clippy is just here to help. No tracking and no data games", and the original assistant's greeting, "Hi, I'm Clippy. How may I help?"
There is no roadmap, product or claimed utility. Community ownership, profile-picture adoption and the anti-corporate nostalgia are the entirety of the project.
Timeline
7–8 August 2025. The consumer-rights commentator Louis Rossmann published a video titled "Change your profile picture to Clippy. I'm serious", which reached millions of views. It criticised large technology companies over data practices, model training on user content and post-purchase changes to terms, and positioned Clippy as the honest alternative. The profile-picture movement spread rapidly across X and YouTube.
8 August 2025. The token recorded its first on-chain trade, having launched through Pump.fun at close to the peak of the trend.
9 August 2025. A community claim of the token's profile was recorded, accompanied by the message "I'm back. Hi, I'm Clippy. How may I help?" The first centralised exchange listings followed.
10–11 August 2025. Further listings and rapid price movement, with an all-time high of approximately $0.0316 per token on 11 August.
Late 2025 into 2026. The original deployer abandoned the project and the token passed through several community takeovers, including a further formal claim on 13 January 2026 restating the "no tracking" messaging. It has continued as a low-capitalisation, community-held market with roughly eight thousand holders at various points, with market capitalisation more recently in the region of $40,000 to $60,000.
A note on contracts
Several Clippy-themed tokens exist on Solana. The contract above is the original "PFP Cult" market from the 2025 wave; a separate 2026 token associated more directly with the original Clippy designer, Kevan Atteberry, uses a different address.
Why it matters
Clippy PFP Cult is a clear example of a token minted directly onto a cultural protest rather than a trading narrative. Like The Council, its value came entirely from group identity and shared imagery, and it faded once the wider movement moved on.
